Employees cannot be selected

When in HumanResources > Employees > Search and the list of employees is provided. If you select one, a few or all of them and click on Update Selected, a message appears An Employee is Required. It seems like the system does not recognise the selection. This is happening for the last week, so not a once-off issue.
