In a previous SMIS there was a feature that prevents a student from getting a passing grade by just attempting either formative or summative assessments.
During assessment setup, a faculty had to designate assessments as formative(CATS) or summative(Final Exams) and this information would be used to impose this requirement.
When the final grades are calculated, the system checks to ensure a student has attempted at least one assessment in both categories to pass. A student who gets a passing score by attempting either and not both does not pass.
This is a requirement for ANU.
